Shilling for Avitable

Not that he asked me, but Avitable has found yet another cool new use for the Internet - Formspring. It's as profound as Twitter, but not nearly as complicated. Basically it's just a site to ask questions in 255 or fewer characters, and then the other person answers. The best part is that it allows anonymous questions, so no registration needed. Go here and ask him a bunch of things. Be as bizarre and lurid as you want - he won't mind. While you're at it, be sure to proposition him for anal sex so I won't be the only one.

Muskrat and Robin also have Formspring pages, but don't expect them to answer because they personally hate you.

And in other news, Japan continues to be weird.

Breaking up is hard to do

Having ousted my cable company in favor of DSL, I'm now trying to ditch my cell phone. I have a cell phone because it was cheaper than a dedicated land line combined with cable since the only calls I make are to order pizza or complain about cable outages. So, I went to Virgin Mobile's web site which has tons of cool options, absolutely none of which allow you to cancel service.

I called their "customer service" and got a very friendly computer on the line that took my basic information and outlined my options, also none of which were to cancel service. After playing with the voice menu for a bit, I switched to an old fall-back trick and began pressing 0 repeatedly. This usually gets you to a person, but Virgin's automated assistant was programmed not to give up so easily. It refused to budge until I selected an item from a new menu, which this time included cancellation. I sat on musical hold, listened to the computer periodically tell me how busy they are (as if that would convince me to stay), then eventually I got to talk to a real live moron person. He asked for my phone number, reason for calling, put me on hold, asked for my phone number, put me on hold, and then...hung up. Good thing I have two weeks to cancel service before I get charged again. I'll try twice more, then file a complaint with the BBB.

That reminds me of the pager company my previous employer used. Our executives often took time away from their golf game to remind our employees to save money whenever possible, which they reasoned was best accomplished by purchasing goods and services that required constant upkeep and replacement parts. The paging company was all about the cheap, crappy service. When you called, you were given two options - get a new pager which sent you directly to a person, or ask for help with your current pager, which put you on hold until they had a spare moment. We quickly learned to use option one when we had problems, and they quickly learned to put us back on hold when we said we didn't really want to give them more money.

My company got a state-wide pager for me, which didn't reach as far as my house in the suburbs of Atlanta. Geographic note - Atlanta is still in Georgia. While talking to their "customer service" people in between waits on the phone, one guy revealed that most of their pagers just work around Atlanta and they give those out in the hopes that the customers don't find out. Since I did, they gave me another one which could at least reach my house. While being sent to the Birmingham plant, I tested it en route. It didn't work beyond fifty miles out of the city.

I wonder why more companies don't use such great money-saving tactics? "Yeah, we only gave your four McNuggets in your six-pack. We were hoping you couldn't count. Here's the other two."

Below is a picture of my new imaginary friend.

I'm going to keep calling him Snoodles until he tells me his real name.

Quick Bunny Test

Apparently my new AT&T DSL service does include personal web space, but they want you to earn the privilege by unsuccessfully scouring their help files to find a way to leave your new number unlisted.

So now that we have solved that issue, the bunnying can continue unabated.

Bankruptcy Update

In my previous bankruptcy update, I said that Best Buy contested the filing which was a misstatement. To contest the bankruptcy, a creditor would have to send a lawyer to the meeting in order to claim that I'm trying to use the system to cheat them out of money, then the whole thing would go to trial. Instead, what they did was to send my lawyer a contract for me to sign commonly referred to as a Reaffirmation Agreement. Because they had been pissing me off and because (by mistake or intentionally) their agreement tried to get me to pay them more than I owed, I decided to let them take back their used TV since I've already saved enough money to replace it with this. I e-mailed the legal bunny, to which she said she normally advised her clients to pass on reaffirming because a) the value of the property is usually worth less than the amount the creditor tries to get (definitely true in my case), and b) with relatively low-value items like mine they often won't try to collect. So, she e-mailed their lawyer and told him to take a long walk off of a short pier and take a squid up the butt (sorry if all the legalese is confusing to you), and I haven't heard anything further. I'm divided as to whether or not I want them to take the TV, since the 52" Samsung looks really cool.

So, now I'm done with all I have to do and just have to wait for the courts to discharge my debts sometime over the next six months. Hopefully it will be over by my birthday, which is on May 15, a good time to buy presents because you should have recovered from Xmas by then and you have several months before the next Xmas drains your accounts again.

New Year's Resolutions

In 2010, I vow to:

1) cancel my cable and switch to DSL in order to save about $60/month. Okay, I did that during lunch. (That's right - I got's the Internet at home again, bitches - w00t!)

2) replace my dying computer with a new one by my birthday, which is May 15 (hint hint).

3) either replace my old car or save at least $10,000 by the end of next year, despite the added challenge of my employer canceling all paid time off (that's right - no vacation, sick leave, or holidays).

4) shart less.

Oh, wait. I just remembered that when I was in junior high, I vowed never to make a new year's resolution, and I've stuck to it all these years. Forget all that.

The lamb of god was given to mankind so that we have to buy stuff and screw me over

It's Hannukwanzaramadamasux now, or as it should be called "Screw with Grant season". Hallmark should begin carrying a line of cards for that soon. "It's the most wonderful time of the year for the rest of us...sorry you happen to be Grant." Following is the chronological Grant experience for the last couple of weeks.

1. On Wednesday the 16th my Internet connectivity died at home. The next day I called Charter* (my cable company) and spent over 20 minutes on the phone with the automated system trying to diagnose the problem. (part of the lengthy time is because my crappy, terminal Gateway PC has trouble rebooting) Bear in mind that all I have is a cell phone that charges by the minute since the only calls I make are to order pizza or call Charter when their stuff breaks.

2. The automated system was unable to resolve the issue, so it transferred me to a person who REPEATED EVERY SINGLE STEP. After another 20+ minutes, he also admitted he didn't know the problem and he scheduled a maintenance visit for Saturday (and the guy in India said Saturday, not tomorrow).

3. On Friday, I got a call at work from another automated system that said the maintenance dude was on his way to my place and asked me to confirm that I was at home waiting for him. I canceled the appointment because my work number is not at home. To be fair, India is several hours ahead of us so when I called them Thursday evening it was Friday morning there and the guy probably thought next day service actually meant Saturday.

4. As my current PC is a piece of crap and is failing rapidly, I decided to troubleshoot it before setting another appointment. I swapped out the ethernet card and cables on both ends of the modem to no avail, but then I discovered the motherboard was having problems, specifically a part that interfaces with the network. At this point I assumed the computer is bad and I ordered a refurbished one from work to have around as a backup until my bankruptcy woes are over and I can afford a proper replacement.

5. I had also previously ordered a laptop for a friend, which then arrived. I plugged it into my cable modem, and discovered it couldn't connect either. I took the laptop to my cubicle and it worked there. So, having swapped out cables and components and computers and having proved that at least one worked at a different location, I assumed the issue was with the cable modem since it was the one thing I didn't replace.

6. I called Charter again and spent over thirty expensive minutes on the phone, this time with a guy in the U.S. who explained to me in clear English that the problem was obviously with my computer and that I needed to contact Gateway for support. I patiently explained twice how no computer will connect in my house even though they work in other locations, to which he placed me on hold, then returned and repeated that their network is fine and the problem is with my computer. Since he refused to send a technician, I asked if I could at least exchange the modem at a local store. He then agreed that it might be the modem and claims they'll allow the exchange. I still haven't done that because I needed Mapquest to find the closest place, but unfortunately I still have no Internet at home.

7. So then it was time to go to downtown Atlanta for my bankruptcy meeting with the trustee. I left very early because the downtown Atlanta street system was designed by insane dyslexic monkeys who huff Krazy Glue. I parked in the closest open parking deck, walked a half mile to the building, cleared security, and waited for my turn. In the meantime I got to listen to a lot of people go through their ordeal, many of whom didn't seem prepared for all of the questions. From my observations, I think it was partly because they periodically change what questions they ask and partly because the trustee altered them as she went along.

8. After a dozen or so cases ahead of me, none of whom had a single creditor challenge their filing, my turn came and I discovered that Best Buy sent a wad of paperwork to my attorney contesting $879.04 I still owe on my TV (part of this is due to late fees they've added since I'm no longer required to pay them due to filing). The Reaffirmation Agreement they want me to sign explains that they will graciously knock the amount down to $800. charge no interest, and I can pay the amount in 18 easy payments of $50 each (do the math). That's so much better than the original agreement I had with them, which required me to pay the full amount within 18 months with no interest added but failed to surreptitiously slip in a couple of extra payments. Since Best Buy was already fucking with me (claiming my payments were arriving late when others acknowledged they were on time) and due to the fact that my TV is now used and a discontinued model, I sent my attorney a note saying they can come get it or try again to get their math straight.

9. And that's been my holiday season - no Internet, TV being repossessed, and I'm only able to blog now because I'm at work. Also, since Best Buy contesting my filing was not anticipated, I get to pay extra attorney fees. And I've sent no e-cards to anyone because Wrongcards hasn't been working. It's a free site, so I have to admit I'm getting my money's worth.

Merry feckin' xmas. Pass the booze.

* I've quit hiding the brand names of companies that suck or screw me over. I consulted my blog's legal department on this issue, and they unanimously assured me that I have no legal department.

Happy Hannukwanzaramadamsux

If you don't hear from me in the near future, it's not because I'm full of Christmas cheer or disappearing a dead Asian hooker, it's because my crappy Holstein-manufactured PC has decided to lose yet another capability, this time the ability to network. (for those of you keeping track, the dead components over the under five years of ownership have been mouse under warranty, mouse out of warranty, optical drive, ethernet card, and now motherboard problems, plus I had to supplement the HD with an external one) I'm replacing Moo PC with a refurbished one from work. It will actually be a slight step down technology-wise, but Big Blue PC's have a reputation for lasting. It will be a good backup PC when I'm ready to replace the fragile cow for my birthday in 2010.

Yesterday I went to a new doctor affiliated with yet another hospital (we have physician franchises the way the Pacific Northwest has Starbucks and other places have McDonald's), but this one was bunny recommended and I like him already. I feared it would be a "how do you do, let's draw blood and decide how many other specialists to send you to" type of meeting, but instead he just checked my medical history, asked that I record my blood sugar levels at various times (and not four times a day like the guy from St. Avarice), then set up an appointment in a few months for a physical. Yes - he's going to try to treat me himself instead of passing me from hospital to hospital. And he even gave me new prescriptions. With refills! Squeee! I suppose the proper thing to do would be to thank my hot pharmacist for her recommendation by offering to sleep with her.

And with that, I get back to work. It's the only place from which I can access the Internet until my new PC arrives, probably after Christmas next week.

Google Issue?

I've noticed that I'm not receiving any e-mail comments from any Google blogs, including my own. My settings are okay, it's just a situation that's popped up this week. Has anyone else noticed that? If so, leave a comment and I'll get it...never mind.

Non Google bloggers should use this opportunity to gloat in the comments, which I also will not receive via e-mail.

Megane Bunny

In case you're wondering why all the bunny reposts, it's because a) I'm lazy, b) I'm busy, and c) I used to have a system wherein I would occasionally add new bunny pics to my web space, then when I needed one I'd just grab the last one I hadn't used. Then I discovered Microsoft's Picture It!, the program I used to edit the pics, was adding a crapload of background information making the files very large. My ISP only gives me 20 megs of web space which became full, so I was in the process of deleting the older images when I discovered that re-writing the .jpg files with the basic Paint accessory radically reduced the file size. So, I downloaded all the images greater than 100k, re-saved them and re-uploaded them. 20 megs of data dropped to less than 12.

Unfortunately, now I don't remember when I used the images originally because they all have new dates. So, sack up and deal with the fact that my increasingly lame blog may be reposting the same bunnies in the near future.

Bunny!

Besides, Ami Tokito is worth a second look. I'm willing to marry her right now.

Warning - no bunny today

In a brilliant new marketing maneuver, Microsoft has decided to make its e-mail incompatible with some of its other products, such as the ones I use for e-mail (home and work) and my version of MS Money. This has improved Money's performance since the solution provided by Microsoft was to just stop logging in to their network and use the program offline, which I would have preferred all along as the one time I attempted to use Money's online features resulted in a complete disaster (while trying to balance an account, it data-bombed my PC with every transaction I had ever made instead of just the last statement), but they insisted that logging in with them made my data more secure than having it completely offline. I'm only an I/T professional and know nothing of such things, so don't ask me to explain that one.

Anyway, their brilliant latest idea requires me to modify my account in Outlook and Outlook Express, which I tried but didn't work - their own site said their instructions had a 50% success rate. Since that failed, I can download new tools from them, log-in via IE (their online access has the crappiest e-mail interface I've seen since I got away from HP's pre-Windows e-mail), or find a new e-mail provider. I have my backup ID with my ISP / cable company / Nazi morons, but I quit using it originally because their server was too unreliable and their online interface is the 2nd crappiest I've seen. It looks like cutting edge technology via the 1930's, back when we had to send e-mail via rotary phone by shouting the 1's and 0's into the handset.

So, I'm in the market for a new e-mail provider. I'm looking for something simple that is free and will love me long time, preferably by working with old versions of Outlook and Outlook Express that already have all of my address information in them. Any suggestions?

Phone Books

Quick question - does anybody out there still use phone books? I quit once I discovered that Internet thing.

The phone company delivered the latest pile of phone books to my doorstep recently. Normally I throw them away immediately (they don't recycle them here), but this time I left them there because I noticed nobody else had touched theirs either. It's now been over three weeks, and nobody else on my floor has bothered with them. The Chinese food and pizza flyers have gone inside, but the bag o' phone books are just sitting there, collecting pollen.

I guess it's a good thing I don't work for the company that makes them anymore. It's a dying industry.

New Template

For those of you not catatonic on turkey and wine, you may notice a slight change in the template. I'm sick of random entities wandering by and not realizing that I am not entirely normal. Anyone who fails to notice my evility with this template is a blind lobotomized fermented cabbage and can't be helped.

If you feel left out or want to make a suggestion, you should remember that, by default, I hate you and value your opinion less than my pocket lint. Otherwise, g'head.

But I am still loyal to Bunny pics.

Mechanic Bunny!

Also, merry feckin' Hannukwanzaramadamasux, fuckers.

Tuesday - bleah

I’m still tired and my brain is operating in power-saving mode, so I stole this meme from Greenjello. There was a sixth question, but it didn’t match the 5 Things theme of the meme, and besides I generally lose interest when they go over five questions.

Five things on tomorrow's to-do list:
Go home for a nap for lunch.
Then eat Japanese food on the way back to work.
See Transporter 3 in the theatre.
Drink beer at Hooters.
Watch Hakaida.

Five snacks I enjoy:
Popcorn! (my dentist wants me to stop, but I have priorities)
Pocky.
Chuka wakame.
Beef jerky (especially teriyaki).
Japanese hotties.

Teeny Bikini Bunny!

Five things I would do if I were a millionaire:
Pay off all debts (the hospital still owns me).
Buy a new car.
Buy a new computer.
Buy a new TV.
Buy a Japanese girlfriend.

Ultra-mega Hot Bunny!

(and her twin sister. that’s right – Ebi-chan has a twin)

Five places I have lived:
Louisville, Kentucky, USA
Nashville, Tennessee, USA
Gelnhausen, Germany
Various tents in the sand, Saudi Arabia / Iraq / Kuwait
Atlanta, Georgia, USA (the most awesomest place in the world despite the paucity of hot J-bunnies)

Bunnies!

Five jobs I have had:
Busboy at a steakhouse
Various fast-food jobs (including McDonalds, Wendys, and Subway)
Kmart shoe salesman
US Army Infantry (aka legal professional killer)Professional Author (I count the six bucks I made selling a story to Hadrosaur Tales, even though the check bounced and cost me $20 in banking fees)

Because I'm tired and have nothing to say

Mute Monday (sorta)

Evangelion Bunny!

Despite the fact that she's a warrior who brandishes what can best be called the Tuning Fork from Hell, the images on the box and the web show her positioned in sexy and demure poses, not in battle mode.

It's Time for Change

And, no, this is not about the feckin' elections. I looged onto bloglines this morning and it reported over 300 new posts, many as recent as April of 2004. And it reported no activity for some people who did post. And it reported broken feeds for others.

So, I'm finally switching to google reader, a move that would fill me with more confidence if it didn't frequently report errors while I was trying to add all your blogs. If I used to comment on your site and abruptly stopped, it's not because I hate you. It's because you were lost in the switch. Either that, or I hate you. Leave me a comment and I'll visit your site to inform you of why I hate you.

And just to shut Crys up, here is a short vid of a forest and an ocean that has nothing to do with J-bunnies at all.

And another one with more ocean.

Direct links are here and here.

New Template

New Template is up. Love it or get bent. Seriously, let me know if you think it needs any tweaks.

Created by LunaStone Designs. That's right, I'm an I/T specialist and yet I paid someone else to do this. As I get older I find it's easier to solve problems by throwing money at them.
