Phone Books

Quick question - does anybody out there still use phone books? I quit once I discovered that Internet thing.

The phone company delivered the latest pile of phone books to my doorstep recently. Normally I throw them away immediately (they don't recycle them here), but this time I left them there because I noticed nobody else had touched theirs either. It's now been over three weeks, and nobody else on my floor has bothered with them. The Chinese food and pizza flyers have gone inside, but the bag o' phone books are just sitting there, collecting pollen.

I guess it's a good thing I don't work for the company that makes them anymore. It's a dying industry.

When my dad came to visit he was all where is your phone book, and when I said I don't use them, HE WENT AND GOT ONE FOR ME.

*hate*

No what the hell would I need that for. they're jokes and outdated in a few months anyway.

The books here don't have mobile phone numbers listed anyway so yeah totally useless.

I never use them, unless we lose power and I need one, which has happened.

We have piles and piles of phonebooks that keep getting delivered. They are all still wrapped. I haven't used a phonebook since... well forever. Whitepages.com is faster :)

I keep forgetting to put them out in the recycle bin. Need to do that...

I use the phone book for the ads if I need something repaired. I like to see if the company is listed with the BB or angies list. You can not get a quick glance of this online.

Since I'm an information whore, I hold on to them. I don't _use_ them...but I might...one day...as a bludgeoning aid...er I mean a tool for obtaining information I might not otherwise fine online....via e-mail or a web page?

eotr - somebody finally caved and took theirs in, so I'm hauling mine to the trash.

whitemist - they're those things used to prop up sagging furniture.

nyd - I thought the accordion was taught to all elementary school kids in Japan.

tracy - when you visit your dad, politely throw his away for him.

ricardo - what's going to happen in a few months that will make them more outdated than now?

sj - I haven't looked lately, but ours didn't have mobile numbers either the last time I used them.

robin - they'd be good in a power outage if you need to burn them for heat / light.

kerry - if you collect enough, maybe you could make a fort out of them.

greenjello - bomb threats are a quicker way to get the government's attention.

metalmom - some places get up to five books at a time (wp's A-L and M-Z, yp's A-L and M-Z, and business wp's) and don't use any of them.

hit 40 - they're also good for squishing bugs. Computer's are expensive for that sort of thing.

prata - s1e1 of The Shield showed that they are good for torturing suspects.

This is totally ironic -- I started writing a blog post about this a couple weeks ago when my latest contribution to deforestation showed up... I was going to write about creative uses for them since they clearly aren't good for their original purposes anymore... But all I came up with is squishing bugs (for which there really is no substitute for a phone book) and using it to prop my computer monitor up to the proper height... Not much of a post really...
