Cultural Note

Over the course of my travels and studies and blogging and other observations, I've come to the conclusion that Americans are, on the whole, more uptight than anybody else in the civilized world (apply your own definition to that phrase), especially the women. So, LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE. And stop suing everybody. If you're fat, it's not McDonald's fault unless you can prove that they snuck into your house and shoved Big Macs down your throat while you slept. If your dictionary CD contains an entry for the word "nigger", you don't need $40 million dollars to recover from the shock. And coffee is supposed to be hot and inserted into your mouth. If you choose to dump it in your lap, it's your fault that you got hot and wet. Yes, those were all actual lawsuits, but I'm too lazy to track links to the stories.

If you're wondering, this isn't in response to anything. I'm just saying, is all.

BTW, if the statement "American women are too uptight" offends you, it probably applies.

I just want to be the first to say that this guy has no class and is nothing but a dumb redneck. American women are beautiful and sexy creatures and if his comment offended you, get with me for a little confidence building sex.

Hopefully my sucking up will get me a date, as long as I don't do anything stupid like continuing to type my thoughts.

I learned a new word today: parrheshia. You probably know what it means, as you practice this type of discourse often.

I think some of us enjoy being uptight Americans. My hubbie likes me uptight. Or was that tight?

Doesn't offend me at all. I'm uptight... if I wasnt, nothing would get done because the American men I meet are so laid back and carefree. lol One of us has to be puckered up and tight. haha

nah, fer reals i'm not uptight. usually. well, maybe sometimes but not all the times. ;)

I wholeheartedly agree with you on this one.

Now go ahead and diss me anyway cuz whatever opinion I share on here gets dissed and I'm an ass to even try again... (Was that an uptight statement?)

sorry leesa - i think you meant parrhesia?

that's kind of what i like best about grant - sort of a laid back, kiss my ass, this is the real me attitude.

of course, it may explain being single.

i'm not convinced being uptight has anything to do with sueing everyone - i think that may just be a poor legal system. or your president being used as a role model.

leesa - actually, I had to look it up, but I like it.

kerry - if being called uptight doesn't offend you, it probably doesn't apply, at least not in the high maintenance, pain in the butt, so not worth it sense I intended.

circe - not an uptight statement at all. You've been dissed here? I don't remember that, unless it was something I said, which I do all the time without thinking.

messiah - thanks. And I think the lawsuits are a mixture of people being too uptight, not taking responsibility for their own actions, and the fact that they've seen so many companies pay big money rather than risk going to court.

I agree with you there, I'd also say the only people as uptight as Americans are the other religious freaks of the world. The Xtians, Muslims, Jews, etc...funny though they all think everyone else is going to hell, their religions are all spawned more or less from the same source.

I've come to the conclusion that though I don't hate people, I generally hate being around them. I think I'll stay in my hole from now on.

It doesn't offend me, but I'm rather uptight. I prefer to call it "discriminating" as in, picky or choosy!

Americans are on a fast track to a breakdown if things don’t slow down. Somehow we have become addicted to overworking ourselves. I think in general both sexes are uptight, ladies on the micro level and guys on the macro level.

that's sooo true! and btw.. men are uptight too! :o)

nobius - that reminds me of one of my favorite lines from the movie Barfly when Mickey Roarke is asked if he hates people: "No...but I seem to feel better when they're not around."

saur kraut - thanks.

liz - our saving grace is that we're too fat and lazy to do any more harm.

ttd - true. Although we're not talking about anyone here - it's those other men and women at fault.

I only get uptight when it occurs to me that there's no way we can sue all the assholes who have wasted courtroom time, money and space suing everyone else.

Although ... now that I think about it ... an across-the-board lawsuit against the person who invented stretch pants wouldn't be such a terrible thing. It's all because of them that we are collectively the fattest country in the world. Think about it. If we had no choice but to zip or button up, you watch how fast we could lose a few pounds.
